Yakoke (thank you in Choctaw) for visiting Windrider Choctaw Horse Conservation!
Halito (hello in Choctaw)! We hope you find our information included here about the Choctaw Horse interesting. The Choctaw is a rare strain of Colonial Spanish Horse also known as Spanish Mustang.
Windrider Choctaw Horse Conservation is focused on providing high-quality care to our equines while promoting and educating about this unique horse breed. We are tribal members of the Choctaw Nation of OK and our roots run deep with these horses. Our people, the Choctaw, have long had a connection to these unique horses.
In 2012, we assisted Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary to open a new Choctaw horse conservation herd by donating our broodmare band and 2012 foals for them to start along with a new herd sire, Lakna who came from Return to Freedom Wild Horse Sanctuary in California. Exciting times for this rare strain with less than 250 purebred Choctaws left in the world today according to American Livestock Breeds Conservancy. See Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary website at

Windrider's Average Joe "Joey", Choctaw/Cherokee gelding trained by Red Bear Farm in Newburg, PA and currently with us at Windrider Choctaw Horse Conservation as our family riding horse. He is the epitome of Choctaw horse personality! (Photo courtesy of his trainer, Lana Salisbury)
